Federal legislation to govern artificial intelligence (AI) took a step closer to reality as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and a bipartisan group of senators announced a blueprint for shaping how congressional committees tackle the technology. The roadmap calls for government spending to accelerate AI research and development and addresses risks related to AI-enabled discrimination, job displacement, and election interference. It also suggests the creation of a national data privacy law and urges the development of policies for export controls on powerful AI systems.
